Montsec, internationally recognized as one of the best places in the world for astronomical observation, is a natural treasure that the Àger Town Council is determined to protect and enhance. Therefore, we enthusiastically join the “Action Plan to preserve and promote the quality of the night sky in Montsec and its area of influence,” a key initiative promoted by the Generalitat de Catalunya.
This plan is much more than a document; it is a firm commitment to combat light pollution and ensure that the darkness of our sky remains a magical and accessible spectacle. The project is based on an open participatory process, seeking to involve citizens, entities, experts, and local administrations to define the best strategies and actions to implement. Actually, the next June 10, 2025, from 6 PM to 8 PM, the Montsec Astronomical Park (PAM) hosts one of the in-person sessions of this participatory process. An excellent opportunity to contribute and actively participate in this project.
The objective is clear: to ensure that our nights continue to be a resource of excellence for both scientific research and astronomical tourism.
The quality of the Montsec night sky already boasts high-level recognition, such as the Starlight Reserve certification, granted by the Starlight Foundation, which certifies the darkness and transparency of our nights, ideal for stargazing. This Generalitat plan aims to reinforce this distinction and establish the basis for sustainable territory management that considers the preservation of this unique night landscape.
In Àger, our proximity to the Montsec Astronomical Park (PAM) places us at the heart of this commitment to star tourism. Protecting the dark sky not only benefits science and observation but also has a direct impact on local biodiversity and in promoting sustainable, quality tourism.
